KEY FACTS There are nearly 6 million carers in the UK, which means that 1 in 8 adults is currently a carer. According to research carried out by Carers UK, 6 out of 10 carers providing substantial amounts of care, had given up paid work to care. In the same research, 7 out of 10 carers found themselves financially worse off since becoming a carer. There are an estimated 24,000 adults with caring responsibilities within the borough of Greenwich. Over 21,000 of these are caring for a relative. Over 12,900 care for someone over 75 years old. Over 6,000 are themselves retired. There are an estimated 2000 young carers under the age of 18 with caring responsibilities within the borough. Some of these carers are as young as 8 or 9.
