This section explains the services we are able to offer to young carers and their families. The service is involved in promoting young carers issues within the borough and offers support to statutory services, such as schools, in identifying and supporting young carers more effectively. We are able to visit young carers within their own home to carry out an assessment of their needs; this helps us to put together the best package of support. Information and Advice Access to up-to-date and relevant information and advice covering a wide range of issues that can affect the lives of young carers. A Bi-Monthly Newsletter The Young Carers Newsletter contains reports on recent events, articles on different aspects of caring for someone, information on forthcoming activities and events, quizzes, poems and information on other services available to young people. Befriending and Peer Group Support The chance to meet up with other young people who have similar caring responsibilities. Workshops We offer workshops, which can cover different aspects of caring for someone whilst looking after your own needs. Joint workshops on families, individual roles, expectations, hopes and life plans Workshops can also be offered to the whole family, these could cover a variety of subjects such as life plans, family roles and supporting each other. Activities Age appropriate activities and short term breaks such as trips and holidays Social events can include activities such as swimming, bowling or going out for a meal. We are also able to offer day trips to the beach or attractions such as the London Eye. Short-term holidays are also offered to young carers who are attending the service on a regular basis and who, due to their caring responsibilities, would not have any other opportunity to go on holiday. Activities, which could include the whole family Some of the activities held are offered to the young carer and their family. This gives them the opportunity to spend time together, away from the family home. Young Carers Action Group We offer the opportunity to become involved in our Young Carers Action Group; the group gives young carers the chance to give their views on a range of issues, which affect their lives. The group may also be asked to contribute to planning meetings held by statutory agencies such as education, social services and health. Advocacy We are able to offer advocacy and representation for young carers who maybe experiencing difficulties in talking or writing to statutory agencies. Information and Support for Parents A range of information is available to parents and we would always endeavour to keep them up-to-date on services we are offering to their children.
